As the final documentation of his artistic journey, Jacky Tsai presents a poster of his iconic Floral Skull print, exclusively for Lane Crawford and limited to 40 pieces. Tsai gave us an insight into his world and inspirations while we captured him creating a large-scale installation at Lane Crawford ifc mall.

On his prints: “I think it was by accident, I did that classic flower skull and I didn’t realise that it would become so big. After the Alexander McQueen S/S 2008 collection release, the print was suddenly everywhere and I realised this piece became very important all over the world.”

On experimentation: “I want to upgrade my game step by step so I developed this Floral Skull project a lot from 2D artworks to 3D and tried to experiment with all types of materials like leather, paper and silk. Now I’ve moved to the paper scale which is nice... If you’re a pop artist, you better try everything”

On the creative process: “About four or five years ago ideas came by really quickly, very rapidly; you follow your heart and work in really quick time. But now, things have changed. I like really organised… everything! In terms of the visual language and the message you want to deliver, every element you want to play with in your art… Now I’m very organised but when you’re young you’re always really passionate.”

On Inspiration: “I think it’s really about your daily life. Like important habits and every day life, I’m living in quite a contrasted world in London. Everything in terms of culture and people’s habits is quite different and I think it’s quite interesting and that attracts me. I just have a lot inspiration from daily life, from all the small figures.”

On his heroes: “Aesthetically, Roy Lichtenstein. He influenced me most because I like the vibrant colours, with a lot of, kind of; bold spots on the artwork and using the screen printing method influenced me a lot. He is my hero.”
