What better way to celebrate summer than to inject some verve into your space? LA-born, Milan-based fashion editor-turned-designer JJ Martin has given us the template for a happy bedroom or a convivial kitchen, with her brand La DoubleJ’s bold colours, confident prints and classic materials.
The brand is leading something of a renaissance, with Martin channelling the spirit of her adopted country and its iconic designer Ettore Sotsass. The Memphis Group founded by the late designer was famed in the 1980s for its approach that drew on diverse strands of modernism to create pieces that indulged in colour and pattern.
La DoubleJ’s take combines a strong, modern colour palette with classic flora and fauna motifs (including some timeless blue-and-white porcelain) as well as modern geometric patterns. Materials are a key element: bedding is breathable cotton, while tableware is classic ceramic and porcelain. For those who like a subtle approach to homewares, La DoubleJ’s pieces make for an occasional striking accent; those up for an all-in approach can paint their homes in vibrant colours and clashing prints.
