THE BERMUDA SHORT, 3 WAYS

Streetstyle-worthy takes on the short of the season

Words by Bridget Barnett

The Bermuda short – the article of clothing that hit its stride in the 40s and then returned in a major way in the 90s (think Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman) is back. A bounty of hot-right-now labels are pulling out their best iterations this season – from Peter Do to Bottega Veneta and 16Arlington.

And while there is no doubt that the slouchy short is indeed stylish, where the uncertainty tends to come into play is when it comes to styling. On a 1-10 scale of “hard to pull off”, the Bermuda tends to sit up there, alongside teeny-tiny sunglasses and bucket hats.

Here, we show you not only how to get it right, but how to style it in levels worthy of being streetstyle papped – cue incorporating some of the most relevant brands, silhouettes and complementary trends right now.

1. THE ONE WITH NO SHIRT

Slouchy suit jackets, styled sans shirt , is having a moment – and it’s a look that goes so perfectly with the masculine-edged, tailored Bermuda short. Keep the rest simple with sleek, modern accessories in monochrome tones.

2. THE ONE WITH THE REALLY BIG BAG

Just when you started to get used to carrying around the bare minimum in your teeny-tiny purse, the Big Bag Club happened (there’s even an Instagram account to prove it, @thebigbagclub). Pair with a slouchy Bermuda and an oversized utilitarian jacket, and you’ve nailed the most relevant “running errands” look right now.

3. THE ONE WITH ALL THE GLITTER

Nothing says "going out" like some sequins. You can double dose on the shimmer when it comes to your accessories too – the leather Bermuda ground the whole look and keeps you safely clear of looking frou-frou.
