HOW TO CARE FOR INDOOR PLANTS

Growing up green

Words by Bridget Barnett

You don’t need a natural green thumb to keep a house plant in good shape. Instead, it’s worth considering the personality and preferences of any new roommates to keep them feeling and looking their best.

Some of our favourites are creations from Ellermann’s new minimalist collection of home-friendly arrangements. Here, we take a closer look at seven seasonal, sustainable plants from the range, plus some guidance for how to care for each.

HI, MY NAME IS…. KALANCHOE

Personality: Easygoing and dependable, treat Kalanchoe right and it’ll be yours forever.

Likes: Plenty of natural light and spending the summer outdoors.

Dislikes: Direct sunlight, too much heat or too much moisture.

HI, MY NAME IS… HOYA

Personality: For the most part, Hoya is pretty low maintenance. It can be a little sensitive at times, especially if you’re overdoing it on the water. Luckily, it doesn’t mind being root-bound, so it’ll be happy hanging out in the same pot for years.

Likes: Staying indoors and low-medium light exposure.

Dislikes: Direct sun, dark corners and artificial light. Most importantly, never cut off its long tendrils – it hates that!

HI, MY NAME IS… PHILODENDRON XANADU

Personality: Native to Brazil, Philodendron Xanadu feels right at home in tropical, subtropical and warm climates. It’s not for everyone, though – bugs (thankfully) aren’t fans.

Likes: Basking in the perfect combination of organic peat moss and composted cow manure.

Dislikes: Getting its leaves trimmed – would you chop Rapunzel’s locks?

HI, MY NAME IS… SYNGONIUM

Personality: Always relaxed, as long as you don’t forget to water it. A Syngonium also won’t mingle well with pets or small children. In fact, quite the opposite – it can be poisonous if ingested.

Likes: Spreading right out and extending in all directions.

Dislikes: Direct sunlight, or prepare for burns it’ll never recover from.

HI, MY NAME IS… DISCHIDIA RUSCIFOLIA

Personality: A true romantic, Dischidia ruscifolia is often referred to as the Million Hearts Plant thanks to its long, dangling stems embellished with heart-shaped leaves. Its love language is definitely physical touch, and it has a tendency to grow on trees and their branches.

Likes: Bright, indirect light.

Dislikes: Dehydration. Watch out for slightly puckered leaves – that’s its way of asking for a much needed refreshment.

HI, MY NAME IS… PILEA

Personality: Pilea doesn’t need much to thrive. It does mature pretty quickly, and as a result, leaves will naturally drop with age.

Likes: A little help from you on the grooming front won’t go astray. Pilea also loves sitting on a shady patio during the warmer months.

Dislikes: Cold weather – it’ll start feeling a little sluggish and growth will slow.

HI, MY NAME IS… MAIDENHAIR VINE

Personality: A true beauty, Maidenhair vine has lush, long tendrils. It really shines in the summer months, but in winter it’ll lose its leaves and doesn’t give as much. Don’t worry, it’ll be back to its charming self come spring.

Likes: Chilling on the windowsill with medium to bright light.

Dislikes: Long periods in a dark location or soggy soil.
