DESIGNER FOCUS:
WOOLMARK PRIZE WINNERS

Meet Edward Crutchley, Angel Chen and i-am-chen

The International Woolmark Prize is one of the fashion industry’s most prestigious awards. Established in the early 1950s to promote and highlight the versatility of Australian wool internationally, it was won in its second year by legendary designers Karl Lagerfeld (for coats) and Yves Saint Laurent (for dresses) — Saint Laurent was just 18 years old, but his genius was recognised by a judging panel including Hubert de Givenchy and Pierre Balmain. The prize continues to herald the newest, and brightest, designers working with soft, fine Merino wool, and was this year judged by a panel including Alber Elbaz and Floriane de Saint Pierre. Here we meet three finalists we’re especially excited about…

Edward Crutchley

Edward Crutchley’s unisex label celebrates exquisite, global artisanal textiles and takes inspiration from international cultures as well as sub-cultures. His designs mix traditional and modern elements such as a biker jacket and an 18th-century frock coat, as well as mixing cultural references — think American college knit with a new take on tie-dye created in collaboration with the Kyoto Guild of Shibori Masters. Crutchley’s designs earned him the prize for Menswear as well as the Innovation Award. We love how Crutchley offers a definition of luxury menswear that’s grounded in research and celebrates the best that global textiles have to offer.

Woolmark Prize winner Edward Crutchley is available in store at Lane Crawford Shanghai Times Square.

Angel Chen

Angel Chen is undoubtedly one of China’s coolest designers. Her bold, fresh take on unisex fashion embraces clashing prints, patterns and textures, which we spotted with her success as a finalist in our 2015 Creative Call Out. Chen creates athletic streetwear covered in eye-catching Chinese icons, re-envisioning traditional elements as provocative, uber-cool garb. Chen was a highlighted finalist for the Woolmark Prize this year, and we love how she continues to show the world what “Made in China” is really all about.

i-am-chen

Hong Kong-based label i-am-chen is a fun-loving, playful knitwear label from Xiamen native Zhi Chen. Inspired by the art world and influenced by her background in engineering, Chen uses cutting-edge knitting techniques to create striking designs in intricate fabrics. After being recognised for her talents as a finalist for our Creative Call Out in 2017, Chen was a highlighted finalist for the Woolmark Prize this year. We love how she offers bold womenswear guaranteed to make a statement.
