To celebrate the Year of The Rooster, Lane Crawford invited designer and artist Alan Chan, a long-time member of our creative family, to create an exclusive art piece.
Lane Crawford’s home city and the fundamental human yearning for an answer to the question inspired Chan’s egg-shaped sculpture, ‘What came first - the chicken or the egg?’ “Hong Kong is such a cosmopolitan city and encapsulates East meets West in a very harmonious manner, which made it important to create something with a universally relevant concept,” reveals the internationally acclaimed designer. “That’s why the idea of ‘the chicken or the egg’ came to mind instantly. It was such an obvious direction to take.”
Equally, the cities burgeoning creative culture resonates with Chan. “Contemporary art is something that is becoming increasingly important in Hong Kong with Art Basel and Art Central every year, and I feel this collectible piece of art will really be able to connect to a mass audience,” he says. “I wanted to create something that will fit into everyday life very easily. It is essentially pop art in a three-dimensional form and can fit into any space from your living room to your office.”
The holiday conjures up heartwarming thoughts for Chan, whose, “fondest memories of Lunar New Year are always spending it with my mum and close family.” For all of us, celebrating with loved ones at this time of year, the question around the dinner table will be, “But what did come first..?”
