Chictopia’s contemporary, quirky clothes are for those “that are independently minded and confident,” says Christine Lau. Launching the label six years ago at the tender age of 24, the designer recalls feeling fearless and determined before setting up by herself: “All I wanted was to create and enjoy myself,” she says. Lau learned early on the importance of establishing a unique voice in the market, and her designs have always left a distinct impression, season after season. Her latest capsule collection, designed exclusively to celebrate Lane Crawford’s 165th anniversary, showcases her strong and utterly assured spirit.
Looking forward, Lau considers her place in a changing era of design. “China is at an age transitioning from ‘Made in China’ to ‘Designed in China’”, she says. “As the public becomes increasingly interested in local design, independent designers will take the limelight.”
Lau, of course, is at the very centre of that transition and, just like one of her butterflies, is poised to take flight.
Neoprene and silk wool are the champions of the playful four-piece collection, completed with beautifully embroidered golden butterflies, an enduring symbol of rebirth and metamorphosis woven through the collection in homage to Lane Crawford’s 165 years.
