MONKEYING AROUND | Lane Crawford

“We grew up in the graffiti-culture of Berlin and still have a passion for working on walls and surfaces in public space. It gives you the chance to inspire people who might never go into galleries,” say the creative duo that go by the name, Zebu.

The pair create bold graphic works that appear in magazines, on outside walls including the Berlin subway, in product packaging, set within homeware pieces as well as in screen prints. Zebu has created an exclusive collection for Lane Crawford that features a giant monkey that adorns phone jackets, plates, mugs and a tote bag. “We like to experiment with different materials and techniques to always surprise ourselves,” the duo say. “When we started to work together we mainly worked in black and white. Over the years, more colours and a more abstract visual vocabulary developed.”

The abstract compositions and Fauvist primary colours share a language with some of art history’s greats. “There are many artists we admire like Joan Miró, Henri Matisse, Hans Ticha, Stuart Davies, Blexbolex and Willi Baumeister, but we also love to discover unknown ‘outsider’ artists who have a unique visual language. We also get a lot of inspiration from colours and shapes that are around us - things you discover during a walk by accident.”

Zebu’s simian mascots will always remind you to keep your eyes open to the inspiration that is all around us.
