The Italians, when it comes to tailoring, tend to do it better. Take Lardini, for instance. Founded in 1978, the family company has been producing superlative slim-cut suits and separates for four decades and, in that relatively short amount of time has established itself as one of the most notable names in Italian tailoring.
So respected is the house that several global super-brands including Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino – to name but a few – regularly call on Lardini to produce their ready-to-wear tailoring collections.
It’s a family affair in the truest sense of the term. Luigi Lardini oversees the brand’s creative direction, while his brother Andrea is responsible for all technical operations and sisters Lorena and Annarita respectively control the purse strings and quality control.
Though business, naturally, is run out of Milan, it’s on the East coast of Italy in the Marche region (which is also home to footwear brand Tod’s) where Lardini manufactures all of its tailoring, from the beautifully finished ready-to-wear garments to the exemplary made-to-measure pieces. Production runs at around 1,600 garments a day, no mean feat for a relatively young, independent tailoring company.
“The clothes themselves are the epitome of crumpled Italian elegance. Soft-shouldered garments and dyed linen suits have a washed-out charm, sumptuous three-button suits have a cardigan-esque quality while dense double-breasted coats are designed to wrap the body and elongate frames.”
The cherry on the proverbial Lardini cake is the beautiful hand-stitched fabric flower, which comes affixed to the lapel of each finished garment – it’s a signature that is unique to the brand and a sure sign that you’ve invested in a suit, coat or jacket which is built to last you a lifetime.
