Twitter doesn’t just stop at memes. It’s a community that weighs in on important issues that brands tend to avoid, like diversity and the murky waters of production and sustainability. And while it’s hf twitter that is often expressing the disdain, the community can also find itself in hot water, like the time they were accused of fuelling the damaging #thinspiration trend that grew out of fellow social platform, Tumblr.
Fast forward to now, and the most topical hf twitter news is a digital solution to the indefinite postponement of the industry’s biggest annual event, the Met Gala. The community is coming together on May 4 for @HFMetGala — a “celebration of the high fashion twitter community and the 150th anniversary of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.” The event does not have any association with the Met Gala itself, but aims to create an outlet for hf twitter to be able to share the looks they’d wear or style celebrities in for this year’s theme, “About Time: Fashion and Duration.”
As creator of hf twitter, Aria Olson recently told NYLON magazine, "in real life, you might not be able to pull that priceless archival Schiaparelli piece or wear the amazing Westwood heels because of the delicate condition, but those boundaries don't exist in the online world. [This] opens the door for people to fully express a creative vision without having to worry about real world issues. It's almost like a higher form of escapism, one where fantasy reigns supreme and impracticality isn't an issue."
We might be logging on for the fantasy outfits, but we’re staying for the commentary. See you at the ball.
