Out with the old...

Words by Bridget Barnett

When it comes to reorganising your closet, the process of deciding what stays and what goes should be a cathartic one. Luckily, we have it down to an art form.

To do it properly, you’ll need a couple of hours and three large bags labelled "donate", "repair" and "consign". Start by identifying all the things you might want to ditch using the sorting criteria below.

If, for any piece, the answer is “yes”, consider the “donate” or “consign” basket, depending on whether or not it’s in good enough condition to sell. If it needs a little TLC, it most likely belongs in “repair”. (For more on baskets and what to do with them, stay tuned for part two of this series.)

Once you’re ready to dive in, take each piece and ask yourself the following:

1. Have I worn it in the past year?

If you live in a four-season climate and haven't worn an item in 365 days, it’s time to find it a new home.

2. Is it comfortable?

This could refer to rough fabrics that irritate your skin, materials that don't breathe well, garments that are too tight or shoes that still give you terrible blisters even after being worn-in.

3. Do I have multiple versions of it?

Unless you’re wearing the same style daily, unnecessary double-ups are a waste of closet space – after all, you’ll always opt for your favourite version. Pick out the one you wear the most and pass on the rest.

4. Are you still in love with it?

A lifelong romance or summer tryst? Special, one-off or sentimental pieces should always be distinguished from impractical extras picked up along the way. If something doesn’t boost your confidence or make you feel like “you”, take it as a sign and toss it.

5. Has it had its moment?

If you bought something trend-focused and know it won’t come back into fashion anytime soon — and it doesn’t match anything else in your wardrobe — it might be time to say goodbye.

Keep your eyes peeled for part two and three of our closet clean-out series which cover how to re-home and repair pieces you’re ready to part ways with. In the meantime, inject simple, clean and wearable staples back into your wardrobe with our edit below.
