New Brand: Lama Hourani A jewellery label laced with treasured travel moments
As a Jordanian jewellery designer married to a Spaniard who has lived in Milan, Barcelona, Bangkok and China, Lama Hourani’s designs, home and wardrobe are all laced with influence from a well-travelled life.
Hourani opens the door to her Shanghai apartment and talks to Lane Crawford about her design inspiration, evolving personal style, and approach to beauty.
Design inspiration
“Behind each jewellery piece is a story that extends from the very beginning of the inspiration process, to a spot in the world that triggered that particular design. I take photos on my travels which are later translated into sketches – bringing bits and pieces of my most loved moments into my jewellery. I'm obsessed with architecture and art. My family owned the first private art gallery in Jordan and that played a big role in my work. I go to art fairs all over the world to find special artworks, which trigger my creative juices. I used prehistoric symbols in my silver line as a language that goes beyond ethnic, religious and lingual barriers.”
Personal style
“I would describe my style as eclectic chic mixed with comfort. I mix pieces from all over the world together – one of my favourite pieces being a felt horse riding shaped hat from Bangkok. I like to break an outfit's palette with an element of unexpected contrast so might add a bold necklace or earrings to add a totally different tone and feel. My jewellery is playful and chic, making any outfit look more interesting – from a t-shirt to an evening dress.”
Pregnancy dressing
“Being pregnant has really changed my process of getting dressed. I refused to buy maternity clothes as I feel they aren’t complimentary to the body. I choose body-hugging pieces that show my belly and make me feel less big, and then I’ll throw something over the top, like a kimono. A few of my favourites include a kimono shaped Gucci jacket by Tom Ford and a vintage Kimono from LA. Comfortable shoes are a must – I like Nike and Stan Smith – finished with a stack of earrings and rings.”
Beauty routine
“One of my beauty rules is to never sleep with make up on. I use thick moisturisers during the day to keep my face protected against weather and pollution, and I wear sunscreen all year round. A hardly ever leave the house without some makeup on – a few favourite products include Kiehl's BB Cream and Urban Decay’s Mascara. In the evening, I use only a light cream or oil on my face to let my skin breathe, especially in humid periods.”
