With a background in illustration, Gildo Medina’s work transcends borders and blurs the boundaries between fine art and design. The artist pairs a love for storytelling with the power to give new meaning to artefacts through a combination of intricate pencil markings and watercolour strokes. Discover Medina’s work as he takes you around the world to cities that inspire and energise him.

The delicacy and sophistication of Paris inspires me. As the city that I have continuously come back to for more than 10 years, it’s where I find my centre. I enjoy writing my ideas in my scrapbook while sitting on a terrace on top of the George Pompidou Museum or in a café in Saint Germain.

I love to wear clothes that I find on my trips around the world. A favoured look might be a vintage Japanese bow tie, with a beautiful Lanvin jacket and sneakers that I got in Paris, mixed with a pair of basic jeans from New York, finished off with a touch of colour with a belt found in Berlin.

As a keen observer, I see myself as a storyteller who documents instances and moments, leaving my tales upon a variety of surfaces. For example when working on the sofa, it became a book with each surface a chapter, from the seat to the armrests.

New York energises me; it’s the only city that makes me feel like anything is possible. The people, museums and galleries open my mind and I love to spend time in Chelsea’s boutiques, restaurants and galleries, especially Gagosian and Pace.

I moved to Paris from London and it changed my whole sense of how I saw life. I started to see the subtleties of the invisible and nourished my senses, appreciating the simplicity of the sophistication that I found in French art, fashion, food and people - all elements I hope to reflect in my work.
