Conceived just last year, Studio Amelia has quickly won women over with its simple elegance, offering contemporary shoes and bags they always find themselves going back to. From her home office overlooking the beach in Sydney, Australia, Emily Inglis sits down to reflect and look forward.
What is the most interesting thing you have seen or read all week?
“Pictures of my new niece Thea out and about in the rare British sunshine! She was born at the start of the COVID-19 outbreak and it’s just so beautiful to see her growing up and completely unaware of the madness going on in the world.”
What book, podcast or TV show do you think everyone should read/listen to/watch, and why?
“People should read, listen to or watch whatever makes them happy on any given day. We’re constantly made to feel inferior because we’re not reading this news report, or listening to that podcast. For many that’s overwhelming, and life is overwhelming enough right now. Let’s sit back, switch off, and let the world do its thing for a minute while we do ours.”
What does your WFH uniform look like?
“As we’re developing our line of ready-to-wear right now, I’m lucky to have samples to road test, so my uniform is typically our oversized lounge pants and matching oversized blouse. We’re developing the collection using our classical palette of black, ivories and neutrals, and these particular pieces are in a rich chocolate which makes you feel instantly more opulent.”
What’s the last thing you cooked?
“Crab linguine! It’s so easy and contains my favourite things: chilli, salt and garlic.”
How do you take a moment for yourself?
“For the first time in years, I have turned off email notifications on my phone and the impact on my mental health and strength has been nothing short of incredible. It has been an overwhelming time for many of us business owners, and I got to the point about a month ago where I had to give myself some mental space. I tested switching off notifications – not only email, but phone, WhatsApp, Skype and Slack. Having tested for a weekend, I kept going day by day until I realised the world would not end if I didn’t see an email or reply to it at 1am – I could just reply when I was at my desk. It won’t always be this way – sometimes you just have to be on it every second of the day – but I’m hoping this change will set a new precedent for how I run my life and my business.”
What is your favourite design you have ever created?
“This is so hard to narrow down! I would have to say it’s a combination. Probably the 1.2 Cross Over Flat as it goes great with a suit, and the 2.4 Flip Flop 75mm Heel for something more dressed up (plus the V-shaped upper straps create a slimming effect on the ankles and legs, so are really complimentary!). The 2.3 Classic Slingback in nude also just goes with everything I wear. It is one of our best-selling styles globally so I’m not alone!”
Which next season trends are you most excited about trying yourself?
“I would say I cannot wait for our new season padded twist-front styles and seamless straps to arrive but I’ve already had the pleasure of wearing my prototypes constantly of late! The padded twist-front is a new addition for us and has been created in butter soft Nappa leather and is honestly the comfiest shoe I have ever worn – it’s like being wrapped in a cloud!”
