With our appetite for trophy knitwear on the rise, New York-based brand Maiyet wanted to do something extra special for the Christmas season with FAIR, its ethically sourced cashmere yarn from Outer Mongolia. Debuting internationally with Lane Crawford, we collaborated with the label to invite four emerging Chinese designers to interpret Maiyet’s FAIR yarns into one-of-a-kind pieces that showcase their artisanship. The results range from the instantly loveable to the spectacular.
The designers are as diverse as their creations.
London based Xu Zhi Chen, who previously worked for JW Anderson, is a semi finalist in the LVMH Prize 2016. His forte is innovative textures and bold, rich colours. Ziggy Chen is an established player, known for his discreet, thoughtful tailoring and beautiful love-worn fabrics. Here he used different dies to yarn wash and shrink to create different textures. By contrast, Hong Kong based Denise Ho behind the label Knotti works with a family of hand knitters on her embellished designs. For Helen Lee, volume and 3D effects were given the limelight in her cavernous cocoon coats and sweaters with fringing and appliques.
These knits tell stories, evoke memories, explore handcrafts and bring together a family of talents united in their love of the craft.
