As far as fashion firsts go, Pringle of Scotland’s intarsia Argyle pattern may not be the best known, but it is one of the most influential. Since its inaugural outing in the early 20th century the house signature has gone on to feature in countless fashion collections, on even more numerous golf jumpers and millions of pairs of socks in wardrobes around the globe.

Founded in 1815 on the Scottish borders by Robert Pringle, the brand – which today is best known for its inventive, innovative approach to knitwear – was one of the first to knit cashmere and was the original brand to introduce knitwear as outerwear, a concept designers from Milan to Tokyo embrace as the norm today.

2015 sees Pringle celebrate its 200th birthday and, to mark its remarkable bicentennial, the brand is this season unveiling some characteristically innovative projects.

The first sees Scottish fashion photographer Albert Watson shoot Pringle’s 200th anniversary campaign. Watson’s iconic monochromatic images of everyone from Robert Redford to Steve Jobs are instantly recognisable, and his campaign for Pringle is no less arresting. The collaboration is the latest in a series of partnerships undertaken by the brand, with previous projects featuring the likes of Scottish model Stella Tennant and artists David Shrigley and Robert Montgomery.

Most exciting, however, is Pringle Deconstructed. For the first time ever, Pringle is offering its customers the opportunity to customise their own Argyle knit jumpers. A fully interactive digital program, Pringle Deconstructed allows each customer to create a cashmere jumper to their exact specifications. Everything from the size, colour and shape, to the unique monogram and logo placement is customisable; an unprecedented step forward into the future for the historic knitwear brand.

“We are thrilled to be showcasing Scottish cashmere and manufacturing with the deconstructed programme,” says head of design Massimo Nicosia.

“It is a fantastic showcase for our partners delivering unique Scottish cashmere styles within just six weeks.”
