The Serbian designer who graduated in architecture and applied arts at Belgrade University before moving to London to study at Central St Martins, is as beguiling as her designs. This willowy figure with straight dark hair and porcelain skin (she always wears brilliant lipstick shades that she mixes herself) is her own best advertisement.

Right now, she is at the top of her game with a Mount Street flagship store designed by star architect, David Adjaye, and a stellar following including Michelle Obama, the Duchess of Cambridge and Cate Blanchett. She lives in North London and is married with a four-year-old daughter. This year, her eponymous brand celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Instinctively attuned to the demands and delights of contemporary life, Roksanda creates pieces that move from the office to an occasion with ease. Find clean, strongly silhouetted dresses that might sport a belt in an unexpected burst of colour; techno fabric skirts that you could wear with a T shirt; and coats that nip, flare and deliver grace to just about anything. Her palette and highly crafted fabrics – envision pink against maroon, or citric yellow and bronze, tweeds, fur and silk – is mesmerising.

She serves a loyal fan club that values artisanship, luxury and an independent spirit. “The brand attracts a woman who is self-assured and dresses for herself rather than primarily to please others. The demographic is diverse but the shared factor is a strong sense of style and will to feel modern and playful. These are women of our time,” says Roksanda.

The Autumn Winter 2015 collection, presented at London Fashion Week, was an exuberant treat. It played off the current 1970s retro vibe with midi skirts, culottes and tapestry knits inspired by artsy wall hangings and an elegant layered look. There were nipped jackets with frill-edged cuffs; intricate high-necked chiffon blouses; fabulous patchwork fur coats in rippling patterns of fox and rabbit in cobalt blues and pinks and wonderful fit and flare gilets that could slip over anything from jeans to a cocktail dress cinched with a handcrafted buckled belt.
