Kate Barnett The Interview

LC: Can you tell us how you started out in graphic design?

KB: I chose to study graphic design in Sydney. I liked being creative and I could draw but I had terrible computer skills. Luckily that could be taught. I've been doing design, illustration and textiles since completing my degree.

LC: What made you want to explore working with textiles and apparel, coming from graphic design?

KB: I think as a designer it's a natural progression to want to see your illustrations on apparel. I was always interested in fashion and my style as a graphic designer was always very illustrative. I applied for a job in a textile design studio and got it – ever since then it's been a huge part of what I do.

LC: Can you describe your signature graphic style and how has it evolved over the years?

KB: It's simplified! Thank goodness. Partially because it's been a long process of learning how to edit myself. I create lots of different styles of art, but generally the things I like in my personal work are always bold and clean.

LC: How does that style translate into a space like Lane Crawford where your exclusive collection will be showcased?

KB: Lane Crawford stores have dynamic spaces that lend themselves to great installations. Having bold, simple characters with block colours creates impact and sits harmoniously with the rest of the store.

LC: Can you describe the collection you’ve design for Lane Crawford this season – what are the stories behind the animals?

KB: It's perfect for the festive season – cheerful with bright colours and metallics. Animals have long been used in songs and stories around the holidays. It's a classic icon and one that most people relate to with positive childhood memories.

LC: Your work features a lot of animal motifs – is there a specific reason for this?

KB: It's a full-circle moment. I drew loads of animals and characters growing up, but stopped to focus on other things and now I’m obsessed again. It's the challenge of getting the proportions right – as a textile designer, I love drawing animal-skin textures.

LC: Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

KB: I don't have one true source. It's an accumulation of old books and etchings, comics, 70s and 80s skateboard art, fashion and trends. I love the work of artists Charley Harper, Jim Phillips and Charles Burns.

LC: What are some of your family traditions when it comes to Christmas?

KB: Usually my family try to all be in Hong Kong. This city really knows how to do Christmas right – all the over-the-top decorations and neon lights make for a very festive place to spend the holidays.
