PREEN’S PARADOXICAL PRECISION

Born from his love of sci-fi and futurism and hers for the feminine presence of vintage, Preen began in the mid-nineties with a small shop in Portobello Market, London. As a new brand for lanecrawford.com.cn this season, we look at the Brit indie label’s signature paradoxical aesthetic and the dynamic duo behind it.

DOUBLE ACT

Fuelling each other’s creative jet since meeting at art college when they were 18, Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi have pushed passed boundaries to bring Preen to the streamlined, celebrity-crazed brand that it is today. Described as Victorian, recycled, deconstructed and utilitarian, the Preen language is as poetic as it is a dichotomy. He loves sci-fi, she loves ruffles, and from that Preen fluidly unites the past with the future, the masculine and feminine. Today, big names including Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss and Michelle Obama fall for the brand’s refined edge with sculptural finishes. We have to admit; the cocoon shapes, subtle asymmetry and traces of romance have us hooked too.

RESORT 2013

A burst of colour with artistic nuances defines the Preen Resort 2013 collection. Inspired by Jeff Koons’ paintings and Nick Knight’s floral photography, spliced up hybrids of oversized hydrangeas, poppies and chrysanthemums take the spotlight. Painterly strokes and plasticised pop colours are met with moments of serenity in the form of sporty minimalism.

Preen continues their familiar visual play on feminine versus masculine. Inspired by Buffalo 66, the dark cult American film, the collection is a distinct tension between seductive innocence and overt masculinity. Updated patchworks of exotic skins on printed organza sit amongst silver-foiled French lace and feminine peonies. Expect to see sharp, roomy silhouettes cut from a palette of navy, blushing pinks and bolts of yellow.
