DIET BUTCHER SLIM SKIN: HARD TO THE CORE

 

 

Rooted in dark influences plus abstract vision, Japanese label Diet Butcher Slim Skin is best known for its classic high-top sneakers that run in larger sizes so they can be worn big, contrasted against the skinniest of jeans. For Spring/Summer 2010, DBSS presents the “W Belts” collection — a new high-top, Velcro-strapped sneaker model. Founded in 1997, designer Hisashi Fukatami wanted to produce modern, sophisticated pieces to create an individual style that was neither “mode” nor “street” — yet an eclectic, unexpected interpretation of their fusion. Forever devoted to the alternative, DBSS is proud to be stubborn, unorthodox and, of course, a true punk at heart.

3.1 PHILLIP LIM: STRONG YET SENSITIVE

 

Phillip Lim debuted his first Menswear collection this year with an infamous quote by Jack Kerouac, “The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn, like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars.” 

 

 

The typical 3.1 Phillip Lim man represents someone who is strong, yet sensitive.  He is stylish and sophisticated but there is an air to him that is also cool and effortless.  Lim says, “These ideals might seem contradictory but my goal is to strike a fine balance between the two worlds.  It’s about taking the elegance of classic dressing but making the look relevant and wearable for modern day.   The look is masculine, elegant yet also fun and accessible.”

 

This season Lim continues to evolve and offer innovative clothing made with incredible quality and detail, inspired by the 1950’s Beatnik culture and embodying a mindset of constant change.  Lim sees this era as an interesting period that propelled and encouraged the idea of self discovery, intellectual development and mental progress.  “I played with the idea of sartorial juxtapositions and the collection features graphic lines and color contrasts.  The pieces have soft edges and I used colors to play with the idea of deconstruction and construction.  I combined subtle oddities, quirky details and tweaked with the proportions of the ensemble.”  It is this mélange of components that makes the 3.1 man at once sophisticated but casual, well-traveled but refined.
