Sometimes a name speaks volumes and SHANG XIA that translates as ‘up and down’ expresses the fine balancing act inherent in this furniture and lifestyle brand. Artistic Director, Jiang Qiong Er celebrates the heritage and spirit of Chinese craftsmanship for future generations. The label fuses tradition with modern sensibilities, the East and the West and humanity and nature. “A symmetrical balanced beauty between seemingly diametric poles,” says Jiang who works from a Shanghai based studio.

SHANG XIA, is in essence, a re-imagining of Chinese techniques and customs; one that has a firm view of the future while respecting the values of the past. Values such as integrity, patience, creativity and artisanship.

The upshot is an elegant line of objects and furniture that brings a sense of grace to the home. The range of products is as diverse and rich as Jiang’s imagination. A highlight is the Da Tian Di rocking chair. Its shape has echoes of Ming Dynasty furniture yet the piece is wrought in lightweight, high tech light carbon fiber material. There are inlaid cabinets, velum screens, eggshell lacquer wares, cashmere sweaters and card game sets all of which suggest an easy, convivial style of life.

Jiang, mother to five, cherishes her home and the creative energies of her artistic family. Her grandfather is a painter and her father; Xing Tong He is the architect behind the Shanghai Museum. “New Year is the moment for gatherings - as families laugh and sit together at the dining table, the feelings of family are quick to follow. My life goals are simple, creating love and beauty and sharing that with my loved ones in a creative way,” says Er.
