Hat hair – a flattened crown paired with a distinct crease – is the quickest way to ruining your hairstyle. Lane Crawford enlists the help of hairstylist Ross Kwan to learn how to prep, style and fix your hair when you’re wearing a hat – so you don’t have to choose between a great hat and great hair ever again.
“Start with a lightweight daily shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair smooth throughout the whole day, a glossy duo will do just the thing. Make sure your hair is completely dry after washing to prevent denting the hair; moisture is the key opponent in creasing your ‘do.”
“Keeping hair lightweight is the key to success when it comes to avoiding hat hair, so use a serum as a sealing agent just on the ends to keep it from getting frizzy. If you’re looking to wear a style that tucks away your hair, try a braid, which is the hair industry’s new obsession. Braid the hair loosely and twist into a low bun secured with bobby pins.”
“Once you take off your hat, you can release your braids to reveal some awesome waves, but your crown will inevitably still be a little flat. To fix, flip your hair upside down and spray dry shampoo five or six inches away from the roots. Once applied, treat yourself to a scalp massage to prevent any sort of clumping of the spray - this will work the product into the hair and give it a voluminous effect.”
