It was with the help of Roberts’ mum’s secret recipe that the duo became winners of Lane Crawford’s The Next New 2016 programme, in which they transformed the humble Asian pineapple shortcake into a refined, contemporary culinary delight. Using just seven ingredients, including French butter and pink Himalayan salt, the melt-in-your-mouth treats won over the hearts (and stomachs) of Lane Crawford’s judging panel, and are undoubtedly destined to do the same at family gatherings this festive season.

For the pair, a love of baking is in their blood. “Stuffing my face was always great as a child, but as I got older I began helping my mum with baking,” reminisces Roberts. “It’s a chance to sit down, talk alone and bond while the rest of the family are entertaining themselves elsewhere.” Cheng chimes in, “My grandmother cooked everything with heart - often not using measurements of any kind, but just by touch and feel. Of course, we do measure now, but we still put in a lot of heart in our cooking and baking.”

This holiday season, the duo look forward returning to their roots in Malaysia to spend time with family, “After all, time is the only commodity we have a finite amount of. Family is what makes it count,” explains Roberts. How will they be celebrating? With a feast, of course! “All celebrations begin with food; it’s what marks the memories for us. Eating, laughing and enjoying it all together - it’s simple but it’s what matters most,” says Cheng.
