Yves Saint Laurent

Founded in 1961 by Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent, Yves Saint Laurent famously introduced the modern concept of luxury women’s prêt-à-porter (ready-to-wear) in a collection called Rive Gauche in 1966. Revolutionizing feminine power and sophistication, the label gained notoriety for reinventing men’s fashion for women with its tailored pantsuit, pinstripe suit and trench coat. Saint Laurent also created some of the most definitive fashion moments of the 20th Century, from the first “formal see-through blouse” worn under a dinner jacket, to the “Le Smoking” black tuxedo, safari jacket and Mondrian day dress. Inspired by cultures around the globe as well as the worlds of fine art, pop art and literature, Saint Laurent was a provocative genius of creative prowess. A true fashion legend, his collections showcased his unwavering brilliance in tailoring, originality, innovation and wearability. The current creative director, Stefano Pilati, was appointed in 2004 and has continued Yves Saint Laurent’s legacy of empowered, iconic designs and making fashion milestones, such as with the tulip-shaped skirt, platform loafers and Muse bag. Creating strong looks for confident, elegant women and distinguished, esteemed men, Pilati pays admirable tribute to the heritage of Yves Saint Laurent while luxuriously evolving it for the modern age.
