Most renowned for its original leather moccasin-style sneakers and a traditional-futuristic approach to quality construction, Visvim fast became a worldwide cult brand since it’s launch in 2001. Yet, mastermind Hiroki Nakamura never had a grand plan to conquer the upmarket streetwear scene and amass a global cult following — it just happened because his vision was so strong. “Visvim began as a reaction to a market of mass-produced footwear,” he says. “We wanted something that was very comfortable, but didn’t look sporty and had a bit more meaning, with a definite higher quality.” Part of a group of über-cool creatives who lead the cutting-edge of design, Nakamura shares ideas with and is inspired by friends who are designers, artists and musicians. This multi-disciplinary approach has also led to a wide variety of pioneering collaborations over the years, which have strengthened the brand’s reputation as an arbiter of cool. Today, Visvim clothing, accessories and lifestyle inventory complement Nakamura’s still highly respected footwear range. Yet, Nakamura remains as humble and grounded as his first handmade sneaker.
