Robert Clergerie

Arguably one of the most influential footwear designers of the 21st century, Robert Clergerie is responsible for the raffia sandal and the widely imitated “parallelogram heel,” known simply as the “Clergerie heel.” After starting his career at Charles Jourdan before moving to men’s shoes, he first launched his eponymous line of women’s footwear in 1981 and found quick success with his lace-up Oxford. In 2004, the award-winning designer emerged from nearly a decade of retirement to once again be involved in the design of his collections. For him, shoes are not made solely for fashion; shoes are made for walking. The grace and practicality of Clergerie’s footwear have led him to be referred to as the “functionalist” of the shoe fashion world. In his own words, he abides by the basic principle that “you carry a garment, but for a shoe it is different: the shoe carries you and all the difficulty is here.”
