Rick Owens

“ ‘Dust’ is what I call the warm soft grey colour of gently slipping into unconsciousness…” Rick Owens is a fashion designer living and working out of Paris. Originally from Southern California, his aesthetic shaped by black and white Hollywood movies and the rawness of a decayed end of Hollywood boulevard. After having his first runway show in New York, sponsored by Vogue magazine in 2001, he was awarded the CFDA new talent award in 2002. Owens’ subversive sartorial style manages to combine the raw with the refined, casual with couture. Named as a “minimalist goth” designing “high priestess shrouds” his work is exemplified by architectural leather jackets and bias cuts wrapped and zipped around the body in sombre tones. The long-haired, pumped-up fashion-rock star studied art before dropping out to learn pattern making, and began making his own garments in 1994. Over the years, the recognisable style of the Rick Owens brand has evolved into more structured forms with functional appeal, earning him a cult-like following with female fans of all ages and styles. In 2005, he launched his Rick Owens Lilies diffusion line - a collection exclusively in his signature silk viscose jerseys.
