Jason Wu

It took a one-shoulder, crystal-embellished white chiffon dress to propel the Taiwan-born, Manhattan-based designer Jason Wu to the forefront of the fashion industry. The creation, worn by First Lady Michelle Obama at the inaugural Presidential ball in January 2009, made him the talk of gown town, with everyone asking, “Jason Who?” Wu first began sewing and designing doll outfits at the age of 9. At 14, he went to Tokyo to study sculpture, then spent his final year of high school in Paris, before enrolling in New York’s Parsons School of Design to pursue a fashion career. In early 2006, the Jason Wu collection was launched, and in 2008, the designer was a finalist of the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and winner of the Fashion Group International’s “Rising Star Award.” Inspired by the classic photography of Richard Avedon and the collections of Charles James and Jacques Fath, Wu celebrates the female form by emphasizing the hourglass silhouette, using super-luxe fabrications and adding gorgeous detailing. Honouring the days when women were always polished and styled to perfection, Wu aims to revitalize the art and perfection of dressing — but with a relaxed and youthful attitude.
