Growing up in an Israeli orphanage, Tahari made his way to New York in the 1970s practically penniless, and began selling clothes at a Greenwich Village boutique. After creating his own line of flirty dance dresses, his eponymous label was born, and in 1974, he became one of the first fashion designers to open a boutique on Madison Avenue. During the next two decades, Tahari focused on mastering the tailored suit and seducing women with his beautiful designs; and by 2006, he expanded into menswear, shoes, accessories and jewellery.
