RICK OWENS
Designer Overview: he eccentric rock-meets-fashion incarnation of Rick Owens was a “glamour grunge” celebrity designer in Los Angeles until he made the transcontinental jump to Paris in 2003. Still based there today, he oversees both his own line, which is now manufactured out of Italy, and serves as Artistic Director of Revillon, the centuries-old luxury furrier. Owens’ subversive sartorial style manages to combine the raw with the refined, casual with couture. While his collections are “about an appreciation of teenage angst,” his trademark aesthetic frolics with minimalist palettes that roar with dramatic structure. The long-haired, pumped-up fashion-rock star studied art before dropping out to learn pattern making, and began making his own garments in 1994. His moody, toned, draped and deconstructed designs — including asymmetrical dresses, slouchy knits and fitted jackets with jagged hems — are adored by loyal fans like Courtney Love, Madonna and Mary-Kate Olsen. Over the years, the recognisable style of the Rick Owens brand has evolved into more structured forms with functional appeal, earning him a cult-like following with female fans of all ages and styles. In 2005, he launched his Rick Owens Lilies diffusion line.
This Season: In Spring/Summer 2010, the Rick Owens women’s and men’s collections present avant-garde sculptures, futurist grandeur and striking cuts in black, white, grey and metallic silver. Rick Owens Lilies features body-hugging dresses, fitted leggings and easy basics.
