Marni was launched in 1994 by designer Consuelo Castiglioni and is still a family enterprise representing joyful and artistic flavor of Italian craftsmanship and design. The line is known for its boho-luxe and somewhat-quirky feminine designs that utilize many prints, fabrics, and textures to great effect. Marni has an aesthetic vision that is versatile for many women regardless of personality and taste. It can be offbeat and funky when it wants to, but retains innate Italian sensibilities in the immensely wearable and elegant designs throughout the brand’s many collections. If you were to look at a table full of components used in this season’s Fall/Winter 2009 collection from Marni, you would most likely assume that this will be an outrageous collection that tests the bounds of the season’s trends to the max. Yet, you would be wrong. Despite the lengthy list including mink earmuffs, ski goggles and gloves, felts, stacks of bangles, patchworked jacquards and the massive range in fabrics and textures, Consuelo Castiglioni has pulled off the seemingly impossible. She has blended a formidable list of materials into one of her more subdued collections yet. There are subtle interpretations aplenty in a line that is extravagant in its own way, and yet is clearly accessible without demanding a rich imagination of how and where to wear it.
