ENGINEERED GARMENTS

New York-based Japanese designer Daiki Suzuki came up with the name “Engineered Garments” after his pattern maker noted that his clothes were engineered, not designed, as each garment featured an incredible amount of detailing. The designer agreed, but wouldn’t relent on his creative vision that took details from American sportswear, outdoor clothing and military uniforms to shape its unique, sharp, refined, practical forms. Mesmerised by American sportswear since he was a child growing up in Japan, Suzuki was drawn to the natural, post-modernist and deconstructive qualities of the pieces he coveted and collected. He first moved to America in 1989, working as a purchaser in Boston while sending authentic hunting gear back home, and set up his label in 1999. His high-end “country-meets-city-chic” collections are crafted in the U.S., mostly from American-made fabrics, and engage in traditional workwear construction and fine tailoring techniques. In 2006, he joined the Woolrich Woolen Mills team, updating the legendary American outdoor brand rooted in 170 years of tradition; and in 2008, nabbed the CFDA/GQ “Best Menswear Designer” award. Brilliantly, yet most ironically, Suzuki today represents the modern spirit of American sportswear fashion.
