JIL SANDER

Given nicknames like “Master of Minimalism”, and “Fashion Reductionist”, Jil Sander is the epitome of a minimalist fashion designer. Sander founded her fashion house in Germany in 1968, and has ever since created unforgettably simple, yet striking silhouettes out of exquisite fabrics and detailing. Sander’s introduction of the New Look reflects a time in the 80’s where women fought for high ranking executive positions, where unnecessary details were omitted and exaggerated ornaments were discarded; the concepts can no longer be simplified further than form follows function. The understated elegance, as many so call it, of Jil Sander continues even after the designer’s departure in 2004, with Raf Simons as her successor. The Autumn/Winter 2009 womenswear collection is nothing out of the ordinary for the JIl Sander label, and the principles of “Classic Sander” still stand. This season’s silhouettes are sleek, and the detailing is minimal, while the colour palette is consistently neutral and black, with pops of bright orange, electric yellow and ultraviolet.
