LACOSTE

Designer Overview: Classic French sportswear company Lacoste was founded in 1933 by tennis player René Lacoste and knitwear manufacturer André Gillier. Producing a white cotton polo tennis shirt prototype, designed by Lacoste to reduce sweat and bearing a green embroidered crocodile logo to honour his nickname, Lacoste is regarded as the company that single-handedly revolutionised the sport’s fashion. In 1963, Bernard Lacoste took over his father’s company, expanding the brand significantly and morphing it into a full lifestyle empire. By the late-1970s, the Lacoste name reached its height of popularity in America when it became the signature “preppy” wardrobe item — worn with an upturned collar by wealthy professionals and the upper-class elite. In recent years, Lactose’s popularity has re-surged due to French designer Christophe Lemaire, who re-invented the heritage brand with a modern, fresh, minimalist but chic look. While still a preppy-chic sportswear staple, Lacoste also exacts an elegant-street vibe.
