BAND OF OUTSIDERS
Designer Overview: Band of Outsiders, founded in 2004 by former Hollywood agent Scott
Sternberg, is designed and regarded as an ever-growing archive of
re-interpreted American menswear classics. With no design training,
Sternberg first created collections by re-cutting and re-contextualizing
vintage fabrics to make classic pieces with hand-sewn seams, unique
details and shrunken proportions. And, the results were stunning: in
2008, Sternberg was named the CFDA Emerging Menswear Designer of the
Year, and was crowned the 2009 CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year. The
Boy by Band of Outsiders collection, launched in 2008, is Sternberg’s
adaption of his own wardrobe, materials and shapes for women. Overall,
the slim-fitted, shrunken proportions of both the men’s and women’s
collections have a boyish appeal, are reminiscent of a ’60s-vintage era,
and celebrate a time where the fashion was more simple and subdued —
yet oozed sophistication and sass.
This Season: Life’s a beach for Band of Outsiders and Boy by Band of Outsiders in
Spring/Summer 2010. Inspired by Jacques Cousteau, some Ed Ruscha
airbrush paintings, and Malibu circa 1978, the men’s collection embodies
rugged nautical tailoring while the women’s range delivers an
urban-surfer/beach-babe look.
