BALENCIAGA
Designer Overview: The house of Balenciaga was launched in 1919 by Spanish designer
Cristobal Balenciaga, the son of a seamstress from a small fishing
village. An artist with a free and modern vision, he saw the female body
as a living sculpture to create beautiful dresses for. From his
“balloon” skirt to his “baby doll” and “sack” dresses, to his 7/8-length
“bracelet sleeve”, Balenciaga became the king of “dissymmetry,” a
mathematician of perfect proportions and sculptor of volume. His
manipulation of the waist became one of the most important contributions
to the world of fashion — shaping a new silhouette for women. After
decades of supreme pioneering success, Balenciaga closed his fashion
house in 1968, and died in 1972. The house lay dormant until 1987, when
it was revived as a prêt- -porter label. Yet, it wasn't until 1997, when
25-year-old French designer Nicolas Ghesquière was hired as creative
director, that Balenciaga saw the phenomenal success enjoyed by its
original founder. Ghesquière’s hip, fresh interpretation of Balenciaga
classics — infused with neo-futuristic vision, structural beauty and
avant-garde creativity — has made the house, yet again, one of the
leading trendsetters in the world of high fashion.
