VIKTOR & ROLF
Dutch duo Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren are two of fashion’s biggest showmen, but not without the substance to justify it. They fuse a grand dramatic vibe with artistic influence to create clothes that are neither too artistic or too fashion-y, rather a perfect blend of both. Though known most for the glitz and theatrics of their designs and their shows, if you put it aside it is clear that their clothes stand as proud examples of great thought and subtle skill. While showmanship is a big part of Viktor & Rolf, their success is not dependent on this. The spectacle is a bonus to collections that are every bit as sophisticated as some of their more understated industry peers. Viktor & Rolf’s focus for the Fall/Winter collection is predominantly classic draping, inspired by Greco-Roman sculpture. Suits created from liquid jersey are a beautifully theatrical and tasteful feature, and much of the drape-work in the collection was done with stiff woolens in shades of off-white, stone, loden, and black to give the clothes a marble-like quality of fluidly solid form. Other highlights in the collection include the soft gray dress topstitched to evoke ruffles, and the silk print chiffon shirtdresses.
